Updated at 4:00 pm: Lebanese poet Ounsi el-Hajj and Al-Akhbar contributor has died on Tuesday after an extended illness. He was 77 years old.
He married Layla Daou in 1957, and had two children, Nada and Louis.
Hajj was born in 1937 in the village of Kaitouly in southern Lebanon. He started writing poetry, short stories and essays while in high school. He has published six volumes of poetry, as well as several books of essays.
He began working in journalism in 1956 for newspaper al-Hayat as the director of its culture page, before moving on to the daiy an-Nahar, where he became editor-in-chief from 1992 to 2003.
Hajj also helped the foundation of Al-Akhbar in 2006, and was one of the newspaper's leading columnist and an editorial consultant until his passing.
In a statement, Al-Akhbar expressed its condolences and remembered Hajj for his "glowing presence, his ever-lasting jokes, his witty sense of humor, and [his] critical eye."
